Motorcycle Helmets: This Safety Standard Will Be Mandatory from 2024 – Motorcycle Helmet Safety Standard ECE 22.06.

For over 20 years, motorcycle helmets were subject to the safety standard ECE 22.05 (ECE-R 22.05). The testing criteria included impact absorption at various points and the durability of the outer shell. However, since June 2022, a stricter safety standard has been in place: the Motorcycle Helmet Safety Standard ECE 22.06.

This new standard, according to TÜV Rheinland, expands the scope of testing by almost one-third. Particularly, the impact test has been made more stringent. Additionally, a rotation test is conducted, simulating the rotation of the head during a potential impact.

How old is your helmet? Don’t worry, there are transition periods for the change from the old to the new standard. Motorcycle Helmet Safety Standards ECE 22.06 apply initially only to newly developed models. From 2024 onwards, such helmets will no longer be allowed for sale.
